Season Summary Hosted in Duncan, BC the University of Victoria men’s golf team had home course advantage as they pursued their second Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) Canadian University and College Championships.
After round one the Vikes sat comfortably in first place. However, day two proved to be a turning point as the Vikes more than doubled their score. The Vikes ended day two boasting a combined score of 571, 16 strokes ahead of second place Simon Fraser University (SFU). Heading into the fourth and final round, UVic held a seven-stroke advantage.
Taking charge for the Vikes was third year
Shelby Dreher. Dreher led the Vikes by shooting a four–under par good enough for the daily low individual round. The strength of the team, as Dreher describes, flows from the depth of the team. “If one of us plays bad we know someone else is going to help out. That’s what happened Monday [June 6] when
Michael Leon picked me up. Our fifth guy made it count.”
The depth of the team created a seven stroke lead after the first round as Leon opened the tournament with a 71, thus erasing Halpen’s 76.
The RCGA Championships is opened to all university, college and other post-secondary institutions in Canada. A total of 153 college and universities participated in the 2005 championship, 20 male teams and 11 female teams. Yet on the final day the Vikes men’s team continued their dominance winning the championship with a tournament score of 1152. The University of British Columbia took second at 1178 beating out SFU who finished third at 1184.
International SuccessVikes men’s golf team captain Todd Halpen concluded his varsity career with UVic in 2006. Prior to his graduation, Halpen was named to the PING All-American First Team following the final round of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championships. Halpen placed second at the 2006 NAIA championship, missing the title by just one stroke and was the only Canadian to be named to the All-American team.
Halpen captained the Vikes men’s team to three RCGA national championships (2003, 2005, 2006). In 2006, Halpen's second place finish at the Canadian Amateur tournament berthed him to the first of two PGA Tour appearances, the 2006 & 2008 PGA Canadian Opens.
In 2007 Halpen represented Canada as he competed with the national team. Shortly after he turned professional and qualified for the Canadian Tour. His success led him to join the 2011 PGA of Canada as an instructure
