BIOGRAPHY

Continuing to build her remarkable resume, Kathy Shields led the 1980-81 University of Victoria Vikettes women’s basketball team to their second consecutive national title as they triumphed over Bishops’s University in a tight 61-59 final on Mar. 7, 1981, in Guelph, Ont.

The team entered the Canada West League Showdown on the verge of a nearly perfect regular season, capturing a 10-0 record at home and 9-1 record on the road. The UVic women earned Canada West Champion honours after sweeping the University of Calgary Dinnes in a perfect best-of-three series. Scoring leaders included Vikette Sandy Lewis as she boasted the second highest shooting percentage in Canada West, 214 points and 103 defensive rebounds. Tracie McAra added to the success of the UVic women with 210 points, 60 defensive rebounds and a 61.5 free throw percentage.

Two Vikettes were named Canada West First Team All-Stars that year, McAra and Luanne Hebb. Hebb led her team and dominated the league as she came in second in free throw percentage, earned 42 points in the two-game Canada West league showdown and boasted 290 regular season points overall. Additionally, Vikette Lewis was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star.

After a phenomenal Canada West season, the Vikettes travelled to the University of Guelph to fight for a second consecutive CIAU title under the tutelage of coach Shields. With two wins under their belt, defeating Laurentian University and the University of New Brunswick, the women’s team prevailed over Bishop’s University 61-59, in a nail-biting finish,.

Hebb led the team with 53 points and 12 defensive rebounds while the Godfrey sisters, Leslie and Shelley, also gave the team’s statistics a boost. Leslie Godfrey was a defensive stalwart for the UVic women with a team-high 17 defensive rebounds. Sister Shelley Godfrey was an offensive dynamo with 51 points and was one of the Vikes’ most productive players in the paint with 15 offensive rebounds and 12 defensive rebounds. Shelley Godfrey also posted a 61.9 free throw percentage and in a daring last-minute steal secured the win for the Vikes. She went on to receive Championship MVP honours and was named to the tournament’s All-Star team alongside teammate Hebb.
