The Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament usually takes place every other year in Victoria but has played out on UVic's campus for the last three years. The four-team tournament is hosted by the men's basketball team in memory of former coach Guy Vetrie and regularly features some of Canada's best teams.
ABOUT GUY VETRIE
Guy Vetrie was the head coach of the UVic Vikes men’s basketball team from 1989 until he passed away September 15, 2003 at the age of 52.
Guy was entering his 14-year as head coach. His accomplishments speak for themselves as he amassed an amazing 543 career victories and was named Canada West Coach of the Year’ on six occasions. In 1997 he led the Vikes to their record eighth CIS National Championship.
Vetrie began his coaching career as an assistant at Laurentian University, where he worked for one season. He played there under Ken Shields. From there he moved on to coach the Saskatchewan Provincial Elite team for two seasons. In 1979, Vetrie made his break in to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport as a head coach with the Saskatchewan Huskies where he served until 1988.
Vetrie was a man passionate about sport and basketball. His impact and legacy is evident in the lives of all of the great players and gentlemen who played under him.
