Vikes defend University Sevens title for fourth-straight year with win over Thunderbirds

Mar. 11-12: Vikes men and women’s rugby at University Sevens Championship (Burnaby, B.C.)

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men's rugby team successfully defended their University Sevens title for a fourth-straight year after beating rivals the UBC Thunderbirds 28-12 on Mar. 12 in Burnaby, B.C.

RESULTS

UVic 1 downed the Calgary Dinos 33-0 in the quarter-finals and UBC 2 in the semis 29-0 before successfully defending their title in the final. The 12 points conceded against the T-Birds in the final were the only points conceded by UVic 1 all weekend, outscoring their opponents by a total of 229-12 over six games.

It has also been four years in a row since 2013 that the Vikes have defeated their pacific rivals in the final.

"The guys played exceptional today and it's a fantastic win for them," said a jubilant Vikes assistant coach Rick Farrally. "We completely outworked them. UBC didn't make any changes at the half and seemed to run out of gas. When we have guys like Jeff Nishma-Miller coming in at half, it's going to wear them down."

The Vikes men's second team UVic 2 fell in the semifinals to UBC 1 by a score of 31-0 while the Vikes women were defeated in the quarter-finals 22-7 by the defending champion McMaster Marauders. After then beating Queen's 33-0, the Vikes women couldn't get past Guelph.

The Vikes men return to action in CDI Premier League action next weekend on Mar. 19 against Burnaby Lake at Wallace Field. Kick-off time is 2:45 p.m.
