The Vikes Starting 5

Name: Terrell Evans

Major: Social Science
Hometown: Las Vegas, Nevada
High School: Cheyenne High School and Legacy High School
Previous Team: Yakima Community College (2009-11)

As the leading scorer of the University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team, Terrell Evans (Las Vegas, NV) needs little introduction. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, the six-foot-four forward eats, sleeps and dreams basketball. When asked what other sports he plays and enjoys in his free time, the answer is, “No other sports, just basketball.”

From the early age of six years old, Evans knew he loved basketball. Playing on his grade two elementary school team as an under-aged player and proving to be an early competitor, his passion was ignited. His drive to play and develop as a young athlete was encouraged by his father, but most notably, his grandparents                                            Rayfell and Algerine Evans. Always by his side, they extended their support as Evans focused all his efforts, time and energy towards basketball training.

Another major influence for Evans has been his life-long coach, Bruce Gator. Evans met Gator in eighth grade and has continued to train with him until this day. Meeting Gator was a turning point for Evans. As the head coach of Cheyenne High School's boys basketball team, Gator worked tirelessly to perfect Evans' skill and finesse as a player. Evans recalls being quite a bit smaller in comparison to both his teammates and opponents, forcing him to be sharper and more agile on the court. His hard work paid off. In his graduating year Evans earned accolades as the top rebounder in his high school conference as well as a school sportsmanship award.

Upon high school graduation Evans made the decision to attend Yakima Community College in Washington State. His success on the court continued, as he became the leading scorer and rebounder and in 2011 ranked 12th in steals in the NWAACC Championship.. After two successful seasons at Yakima, Evans was ready for a change and took the leap to commit to a university program. Although he was approached by a number of schools, it was the Vikes coaching staff and program that enticed Evans the most.

Never having travelled outside of the United States, Vikes head coach Craig Beaucamp and the rest of the coaching staff created a family atmosphere that Evans genuinely enjoys. It is without a doubt that the Vikes program has improved his game through offering the ability to work with players that both compliment and challenge each other. Evans says the best part about the team is how different each of the players are but how easily they all get along and play as a unit.

As much as Evans appreciates and enjoys his life in Victoria, he truly misses his family and close friends back in Las Vegas, as well as the certain luxuries afforded by living and growing up in one of the entertainment capitals of the world, “The ability to eat! Restaurants are open until three or four in the morning back home!”

Although Evans may not play any other sport he considers himself an easy- going, laid-back guy who is funny and enjoys watching movies. When asked his favourite movie he  concludes that The Town was definitely one of his recent favorites. His favorite actor, without a doubt, is Denzel Washington and in close second, Will Smith.

Unquestionably, Evans believes he made the right choice in attending UVic. As he sits and recalls what the biggest milestone has been playing for the Vikes you cannot help but see how much he loves this sport.

“How much I have improved since my first year, the progress the program offers, my consistent growth in skills and training, my time commitment to practice  and the weight room and leaving it all on the court.”

His personal goals include consistent hard work on and off the court and continuing to perfect his game to the best of his ability. Hard work and ambition earned him the “Sportsmanship of the Year” award in 2009 and that same hard work and ambition has driven him to lead Canada West in steals and be a consistent member of the 2012-13 starting five. Evans was also the lone Vike to be named a 2013 Canada West Second Team All-Star.

Evans has only one plan for his future - play basketball. He hopes to one day be recruited to play professional basketball overseas in Europe and with the encouragement, support, guidance and training from past coaches such as Gator and Yakima College's Greg Oldhem as well as current Vikes head coach Beaucamp and assistant coaches Craig Behan, Phil Ohl and Spencer MacKay, Evans is determined to make this dream come true.

With the ultimate CIS prize now on the line, Vikes fans can only hope that Evans will continue to make an impact with his skill and competitive determination.
