GAME 8 - Men: UFV 4 - TWU 0
VICTORIA - In the men's final of the annual Keg Spring Cup, the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Trinity Western Spartans 4-0 in a convincing fashion. Fraser Valley's Sasa Plavsic opened the scoring attempts in the first minute of play but Spartans keeper Evan Lowther made the save. In the 28th minute of play Plavsic fed a great ball past the Spartans back line to an open Trent Mayer, whose composed shot put the Cascades up 1-0. The Spartans had a chance when Jason Wiens came down the right side of the field and had a go from outside the 18-yard-box, ringing it off the left post. David Malamura closely followed for the rebound shot but was later called offside. Minutes later, Trinity Western keeper Shawn Parks made an attempt to clear the ball but didn't quite connect, slicing the ball backwards to give the Cascades a 2-0 lead.
Daniel Molendijk, of Fraser Valley, put his team up by three in the second half, when he received a great feed from Mayer for the tap in. In the other end, Cascades keeper Mark Village was kept busy when Spartans' Andrew Phillips crossed a great ball looking for Brayden Gant but Village made the save. A series of second half cautions did not help the Spartans gain much momentum and in the 90th minute, Ethan Collins pushed the lead to four. Molendijk made a great cross to Collins who made a good lead, controlled the ball and shot it past Trinity Western's keeper, Lowther. The 4-0 win for the Cascades puts them at the top of the standings for the 2012 Keg Spring Cup.

GAME 7: WOMEN: TWU 1 - UVIC 0
VICTORIA - In the women's final of the annual Keg Spring Cup, the Trinity Western Spartans defeated the UVic Vikes women's soccer team 1-0 thanks to a Colleen Webber free kick. The Vikes closely matched the Spartans in opportunities with Trinity Western edging the Vikes in shots 11-9 during the game.
Off the kickoff, UVic's attempt to move the ball around eventually turned them backwards, forcing a fifty-fifty pass back to goalkeeper Stephanie Parker (Chemainus, BC). Spartans forward Jessica King rushed the pass, beating Parker to the ball but her attempt rolled just wide of the net. Re-gaining their shape, the Vikes turned to midfield-forward Lindsay Hoetzel (Victoria, BC) for the first shot in Spartans territory, in the 7th minute, but her shot soared high. Trinity Western's Tessa Meyer got her head on a cross from King a few minutes later but that attempt just slipped over the bar.
In the 26th minute of play, Meyer made an excellent through pass for King, sending her on a break away but UVic keeper Parker, with good timing, slid out to steal the ball cleanly from King's feet. Parker was called to action a number of time following saving three great strikes from veteran Melissa Mobilio and another close chance from Vanessa Kovacs. In the 37th minute, Webber had her opportunity off a free kick that hit underneath the cross bar, bounced down and in to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead. At the half, Trinity Western tallied eight shots, with Parker getting a piece on six of those.
The Vikes opened the second half with a good opportunity for rookie Shannon Elder (Victoria, BC). Elder's finish off a Tessa Margetts (Victoria, BC) cross was shot high of the goal. Elder was fed again, in the 85th minute, when Hoetzel connected for a good service across but Elder's shot went wide. The Vikes were unsuccessful at securing a goal and the 1-0 lead would stand to give the Spartans a first place at the 2012 Keg Spring Cup.

GAME 6: MEN: UBC 1 - UVIC 0
VICTORIA - In the third-place match up between rivals UBC and the UVic Vikes men's soccer team, it was the T-Birds that came out on top thanks to an early goal by Paul Clerc. Canada West rookie of the year Cam Hundal (Surrey, BC) was the Vikes' stand out player of the match causing consistent havoc for the UBC defensive line.
In the 13th minute, Clerc secured the 1-0 lead and final score when he tapped in a direct free kick past Vikes keeper Michael Branion-Calles (Richmond, BC). Both teams limited play to the midfield keeping the shots on goal at half time 7-6 in UBC favour.
Following the break, the Vikes had thought they netted the tie-up goal. The ball appeared to cross the goal line but was cleared very quickly and the referee allowed play to resume. Two follow-up shots immediately after were blocked and well-saved. Throughout the second half the Vikes and T-Birds went shot-for-shot with possession not favouring either team heavily.
Similarly to the Vikes' opportunity, UBC has an excellent chance, in the 71st minute, when Brandon Ho's attempt was cleared on the line by UVic defender Toshi Hayashi (Victoria, BC). The resulting corner kick was unsuccessful as Branion-Calles was there to clean up. Play continued in both ends as Andrew Ravenhill (Victoria, BC) did well to block a long-range shot from UBC's Cameron Davis and UBC net-minder Jack Whelan made a great save on Wesley Barrett (Richmond, BC)'s shot from similar range.
The Vikes had one final burst in the 89th minute of play when Hundal worked his quick feet up the field to serve a perfect ball in from of the net where two Vikes players were waiting. Neither player was able to get a touch on the ball and UBC's clear would keep the Vikes off the board to leave the score 1-0 for the T-Birds. The Birds finished the tournament claiming third place.

GAME 5: WOMEN: UBC 4 - ALB 0
VICTORIA - The weather co-operated perfectly for the final day of the annual Keg Spring Cup hosted at Centennial Stadium. The UBC Thunderbirds and Alberta Pandas opened up day two with the T-Birds coming away with a 4-0 win for a third place finish in the four-team tournament.
Despite the score margin, play was pretty even in the opening half with both teams trading opportunities. The Pandas were the first to lay on the pressure, earning three corner kicks and three shots in the first 11 minutes of play. Mid-way through the first half, the Pandas tallied seven shots, to UBC's three but in the 36th minute, a defensive foul at the top of the box left the birds with a free chance. T-Birds' Kelly Cook took the free kick and served a ball perfectly for Lisa Furutani to head in for the 1-0 lead. In the final minute of the half, Alberta received their best opportunity on a free kick taken by Paige Howes. The ball was well-saved initially by the UBC keeper, who had some extra help from the cross bar.
Following the locker room chat, the Birds seemed to elevate the pace of their game but were still having troubles finding the back of the net. Alberta equalized in opportunity but both keepers remained solid between the posts. Finally, in the 69th minute, Rachael Sawer had an opportunity on a direct free kick and made no mistakes, pushing the Birds up by two. In the 71st minute, Furutani chipped in for her second of the game off a scramble in the box. With the T-Birds finally finding some momentum, stoppage of a dangerous attack was attempted by Alberta keeper Christine Tallon, but she was unsuccessful and was forced to foul in her box. Diane Rizzardo stepped up for UBC to take the penalty kick and made no mistake, giving the T-Birds the 4-0 go-ahead. The game remained at 4-0 for UBC with the Birds out-shooting the Pandas 16-8 in the second half.
