What the Vikes did this summer

VICTORIA - While varsity competition has remained inactive, many of the UVic Vikes student-athletes have netted success in national and international competition during the summer months:

  • In mid-June members of the GOLF team Anne Balser, Mitch Evanecz and assistant coach Dennis Fedoruk represented Canada at the FISU World University Championship in Antequerra, Spain. Balser realized the best-ever finish by a Canadian with a 12th place showing.

  • Coach Rick Crawley led a five-member contingent at the FISU World University ROWING Championships in Szeged, Hungary in early August. Vikes competitors included Lacey Crawley, Mike Mason, Eric Bevan and Eric Tremblay.

  • Adam Kleeberger signed a pro contract in Auckland, New Zealand, Phil Mack was selected for the Middlesex Sevens, three Vikes travelled to Portugal for the FISU Sevens championship (Adam Timler, Angus MacKay, Rick Farrally), and three Vikes helped Canada achieve a best-ever finish at the Churchill Cup (Andrew Tiedemann, Ryan Hamilton, Pat Riordan) in a busy summer for MEN'S RUGBY.

  • WOMEN'S RUGBY kicking prop Randi Hunter helped lead Canada's Under-20 team to a North American Caribbean championship title, after a 6-3 victory over USA in the late-August title match.

  • Recruit Richard Weinberger won bronze in the 10km open water at the Pan Pacific SWIMMING championships in late August, where he was joined by fellow Vikes Nick Sinclair and Aimeson King.

  • Two members of the WOMEN'S FIELD HOCKEY team, Danielle Hennig and Katie Collison, participated with the Senior National team in an early August test series against Chile. Collison was also named to the Commonwealth Games team.

  • Keegan Pereira of the MEN'S FIELD HOCKEY team, who helped Canada reach the World Cup in February, has been named to Commonwealth Games roster.

  • Three members of the MEN'S SOCCER team, Bobby Eng, Andrew Ravenhill and Craig Taylor, earned August call-ups for the Victoria Highlanders match against NASL-bound pro outfit FC Edmonton.

  • Sixteen current and former Vikes players dotted the roster for the debut season of Victoria Higlanders WOMEN'S SOCCER team, including UVic returnees Stephanie Parker, Meaghan Schaefer, Stephanie Davidson, Noelle Sylvester, Kelsey Blake, Kelly Forbes, Nellanna Kurylo and Tanya Jones.

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL senior Ryan MacKinnon used monies raised from his and his brother's hoops camp in Comox to build a basketball court near the Phillipines' Smokey Mountain ghetto.
