VICTORIA - With a veteran laden lineup and a few key recruits already lined up for next season, UVic Vikes women's basketball coach Brian Cheng has announced a pair of recruits for the 2011-12 campaign.
Jordyn Newman of Surrey's Elgin Park and Zoey Haramboure of Langley's Brookswood will join the Vikes in the fall of 2011. Newman will redshirt next year, as she recovers from a knee injury, while Haramboure completes her grade 12 year.
"With the Canada West being as competitive as it is, you always have to be looking ahead at ways to get better and we're welcoming two of the best shooters in the province," said Cheng, who was CIS Coach of the Year in 2010.
Newman, a 5-foot-11 guard, has seen limited playing time since tearing her ACL in December 2008, and then reinjuring the same knee in her first game back. In some of her last court action, Newman sparked Elgin Park to a provincial title in 2008 and also scored a team-high 27 points in the BC Under 17's loss in the Western Canadian final.
Haramboure is the first-ever early recruit to the Vikes program. The 5-foot-10 guard/forward will return to Brookswood in the fall with hopes of repeating her provincial all-star performance in 2010. This summer, Haramboure will compete at the national championships with the BC Under-17 squad.
"Credit Stu Graham (Elgin Park) and Neil Brown (Brookswood) with developing two complete players," said Cheng. "When the ball drops in 2011-12, I know Jordyn and Zoey will be ready to contribute."
