Vikes celebrate another season of champions

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria handed out its major athletic awards at the Vikes Celebration of Champions Tuesday night, and men's cross-country and track star #Johannes Mallie# came away the big winner as recipient of the prestigious President's Cup.

Mallie, a five-time CIS gold medalist and Academic All-Canadian, received the President's Cup as the outstanding senior athlete who best combines scholastic achievement and athletic ability. Meanwhile, Athlete of the Year awards were presented to women's soccer striker #Kendra Flock# and #Josh Morris# of the men's rowing team.

Complete award winners listed below.

The Vikes used the evening to celebrate yet another banner year. Five Vikes teams celebrated championships in 2009-10, including the men's rowing team's Canadian University championship. The Vikes also had 15 CIS All-Canadians, 34 Canada West All-Stars, and 28 athletes were named to National team rosters.

Prior to the athletic awards banquet, the Vikes also held the UVic Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Tracie Sibbald (nee McAra) and Laurelee Kopeck. Sibbald played in five CIS Championship finals as a member of the women's basketball team, and Kopeck holds the record with 163 caps for the Senior National women's field hockey team.

PRESIDENT'S CUP - Johannes Mallie

This year Mallie made history as the first Vikes runner to ever win five straight CIS gold medals, as the captain of the 4x800-metre relay team. A member of the cross-country and track team for five years, the Delta native finished his varsity career as a seven-time CIS All-Canadian and a nine-time Canada West All-Star. This year he won Canada West gold in the 1500m, and won the conference's bronze medal at the cross-country finals. An Academic All-Canadian recipient, Mallie is studying mechanical engineering at UVic

The other nominees were women's soccer defender #Holly Fiddick# and men's rower #Tom Watson#.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Josh Morris

Morris was a catalyst in the men's rowing team's championship season - delivering team titles at the Brown Cup, Western Canadian Championship and the Canadian University Championship, while also winning individual honours at the National Indoor championship. The Victoria native was the seven seat in the eight's gold-medal victory at the Canadian University Rowing Championships and also picked up a silver in the pair.

The other nominees were striker #Cole McFarlane# of the men's soccer team and men's cross-country/track senior Johannes Mallie.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Kendra Flock

Flock enjoyed one of the most successful seasons ever by a Vikes women's soccer player. The Calgary native was named Canada West MVP and CIS All-Canadian after scoring a league-high 14 goals, which was the second highest single-season total in league history and also broke a UVic school record. Flock's performance was so impressive, she was seconded for the Canadian Senior National team's training camp in Florida and later helped Canada win the Cyprus Cup.

The other finalists were women's golfer #Anne Balser# and women's field hockey midfielder #Katie Collison#

MALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - #Nick Sinclair#

Sinclair became the first swimmer in Canada West history to be named Rookie of the Meet and Athlete of the Meet in the same year, and the first Vikes male swimmer to capture either award. The Victoria native's medal haul at the conference championship included four gold and two silver. At the CIS Championships, he became the first Vikes male rookie to win gold in 25 years, after winning the 200m backstroke.

The other finalists were men's soccer defender #Bobby Eng# and #Karl Robertson# of the men's cross-country/track team.

FEMALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - #Kyla Kirby#

Kirby played every minute of every game for the Vikes women's field hockey team this season. The defender from Victoria played a pivotal role in the corner defensive and offensive units. Kirby also helped bolster the Vikes defensive unit, which led the league in fewest goals allowed. At the CIS Championships, Kirby was the only rookie named to the Tournament XI after the Vikes won the bronze medal.

The other finalist was #Megan Woodland# of the women's golf team.

CHANCELLOR'S AWARD - #Jackie Snell#

Snell was a three-year captain of the women's soccer team, and this past season was named CIS All-Canadian for the first time. The Victoria native was also co-chair of the student-led "Our Vision" committee, which played an important role in raising awareness and advocacy for the proposed athletics and recreation centre. Snell has also been co-president of the Vikes varsity council for the past two years.

The other nominees were women's rower #Lacey Crawley#, women's field hockey defender #Perri Espeseth#, and #Darren Mazzei# of the men's track team.

PROVOST AWARD - #Remy Mock#

Mock, a member of the men's swim team, won the Provost Award after posting the highest academic average of returning student-athletes. The Victoria native had a grade-point average of 8.88 during the 2008-09 academic year, while studying specialized math and physics courses at UVic.

PUBLISHER'S AWARDS

There were two recipients of this year's Publisher's award, which recognizes those individuals within the community who have made an outstanding volunteer contribution to the Vikes varsity program. Dave Docherty and Bruce Howe were recognized separately for their long-time contributions to the Vikes rugby programs. Docherty is currently an assistant with the men's team, while Bruce is an assistant with the women's team.
