HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England - The University of Washington thwarted the UVic Vikes men's rowing eight bid to advance to the semi-finals of the Temple Cup Challenge at the Henley Royal Regatta.

Washington, the U.S. freshman champions, won by a narrow margin, surging ahead over the final 600-metres to and capturing a two-length victory. Washington advanced to the quarterfinals with previous victories over Nihon University of Japan and University of Warwick.

The Vikes, competing at the prestigious regatta for the first time since 1980, won their first two races by defeating University of London B and Eton College.
