WINDSOR - For a fifth straight year, the UVic Vikes men's 4x800-metre relay team has won CIS championship gold. The Vikes won the marquee race of day two at the CIS Track & Field Championships.
FULL RESULTS
The Vikes winning relay team, which consisted of #Daniel Mallie#, #Darren Mazzei#, #Karl Robertson# and #Cliff Childs#, had a winning time of 7:37.62 to preserve the record streak that began in 2006. Toronto won silver (7:38.07) and Laval captured bronze (7:38.12).
Mallie, a fifth-year senior from Delta, BC, has been a member of all five relay teams and becomes the first runner in school history to be crowned a five-time CIS all-Canadian.
"Dan ran probably the race of his life to help us overcome an early deficit," said Mazzei. "It was a close one, I could feel Laval on my shoulder the last 100m, but fortunately I managed to hold them off."
Mazzei brought the title home, running the anchor leg as he has done three times previously. The Regina native also ran earlier in the day, placing fourth in the 1000m.
Earlier in the day, #Julia Tschanz# won a bronze medal in the 3000m. The Victoria native and Canada West champion finished with a time of 9:39.77. Teammate #Claire Jean# placed eighth in the race.
The medals bumped the Vikes all-time total to 84 at the CIS Championships, which now includes 38 gold medals.
The women's 4x800 relay team, consisting of #Brittany Therrien#, #Kendra Pomfret#, #Lauren Beaulieau# and #Alicica Roske#, finished ninth with a time of 10:06.88.
The CIS Championships conclude Saturday at Windsor's St. Denis Centre. The Vikes will race in the 1500m, an event where the men's and women's teams won five of a possible six medals at the conference meet.
