Last shot at the champs
WBB Preview Teamplate Feb 13 Kristen Hughes
The UVic Vikes women’s basketball team get a shot at toppling the no. 1 ranked team in the nation when they host the Simon Fraser Clan, winners of 54 straight games on Saturday afternoon.

GAME INFORMATION
Sat. Feb. 13 vs. Simon Fraser Clan (McKinnon Gym) – 1:00pm

SCOUTING THE VIKES

The no. 6 Vikes (13-4) sealed a home playoff berth last weekend when they swept provincial rivals no. 9 UBC Thunderbirds at War Memorial Gym. Second year point guard Debbie Yeboah led the Vikes with a 24 point effort in Saturday’s 64-58 victory over the T-birds and ranks second in team scoring. Kayla Dykstra remains the top offensive contributor for the Vikes and her 15.1 p/g ranks fifth in the conference. Bragging rights are on the line this Saturday when the Vikes will have one last chance to defeat the Clan in the Canada West regular season with SFU departing for the NCAA next fall.

SCOUTING THE CLAN

After throttling the TRU WolfPack 81-47 last Saturday, Simon Fraser moved to a perfect 16-0 on the season and locked up the no.1 seed heading into the conference playoffs. The reigning national champs boast the conference’s top scoring unit (84.4 p/g) with Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe, Matteke Hutzler and Kate Hole ranked 1-2-3 in Canada West shooting percentage. The Clan is also ranked first in defence (55.4 p/g), blocked shots (4.6 /g) and steals (13.8 /g). With a heavy arsenal putting points on the board, the balanced squad has just one player in the conference’s top ten scorers with Laura Weigl averaging 14.4 p/g.

HEAD TO HEAD

SFU was last defeated on October 31st, 2008. The team to beat them was none other than the UVic Vikes who edged their mainland rivals 57-56. Dykstra led all scorers on the night with an 18-point, 12-rebound performance. When the two sides met in the ’09 season opener, the Clan held on for a 61-49 win at McKinnon Gym.
