MONSTER ERG
Hundreds of UVic athletes will compete alongside the Vikes rowing squads to test themselves individually on Sunday when they 'row' a distance of two kilometers on ergometers.
This year's Monster Erg regatta will run 33 events, listed in 15-minute intervals. Participants are pitted against one another in a video game-type format where they compete against rowers in Regina, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax.
The Erg is an official satellite of the World Indoor Championships known as the 'Crash-B-Sprints' held in Boston each year. Four qualifiers with the most competitive times could win airfare to the competition south of the border.
For newcomers it's an opportunity to test themselves against the nation's best but for the Vikes who have undergone rigorous training regiments over the holidays, the regatta kicks off the beginning of a tough winter schedule.
“We're at a point in the season where our real competitions are just starting up,” Vikes rowing captain Brent Dallimore said. “This gives us a chance to see if we're ready for our upcoming races over the next couple of months.”
The Vikes will compete in four regattas over the course of the semester including the Elk Late Spring Regatta and the Brown Cup, both held in Victoria later during the semester.
