Vikes capture conference crown
XC CIS Championship 09
KINGSTON - The UVic Vikes women's cross-country team won the Canada West conference title and placed 4th overall at the CIS Championship in Kingston.

FULL CIS RESULTS

Led by a 3rd finish from Deidre Moran (16th CIS), the Vikes won their 18th Canada West conference banner and first since 2005.

Because the Canada West doesn't host a conference championship meet, the results at the CIS championship 5km race determine team, individual titles and award winners.

"Going into the weekend our goal was to win the Canada West, and thanks to some great performances we were able to come away with the title," said head coach Brent Fougner. "It was a great year for the team, and great way to end the season."

The Vikes netted the low-point total amongst Canada West schools, finishing with 54 points. Alberta finished in second with 63 points and Manitoba third with 65 points.

In addition to Moran, whose time of 17:47.5 narrowly missed all-Canadian status, the Vikes had two other Canada West First Team All-Stars. Claire Jean finished 5th (17:54.8, 19th CIS) and Julia Tschanz placed 7th (18:14.1, 27th CIS). It is the third straight All-star nod for Jean, and second for Tschanz, who was also 2008 Canada West Rookie of the Year.

The Vikes also had two Canada West award winners as Brent Fougner was named Coach of the year for the fifth time, and Lauren Beaulieau received the conference's student-athlete award, recognizing commitment to athletics, academics and community.

Guelph won the overall CIS title for a fifth straight year, establishing a new CIS record for consecutive titles and also breaking UVic's record of 13 combined men's and women's titles.
